Last weekend we hosted Wellington Utd in the last game of round 2. We knew that they would be looking to redeem themselves from the 7-0 defeat we inflicted on them at Newtown Park in round 1, and that despite their current 3rd place on the table, they’re not a side to be taken lightly.
The first half was a fairly even battle, with a couple of chances being created by both sides. On balance, we looked the more threatening in front of goal, but Wellington Utd were giving us everything physically, with some agricultural defending at times. One tackle saw Wgtn United’s Dutch import collect a yellow card about 30 mins into the game. Both teams were scrapping and fighting for every ball, and the halftime scoreline reflected that at 0-0.
The second half we started the stronger and continued to press Utd back into their own half. Finally, after forcing several corners from Bex Jeffries, Emma Main latched onto one, and found the ball in the back of the net to put us 1-0 up. Not long after, a third rash challenge from Utd’s Dutch defender was penalised with a second yellow card, reducing them to 10 players. We were able to take advantage of that, and in the 86th minute, Sarah Gregorious whom had been causing problems for their defence all game, pounced on a corner that dropped to her feet and put us 2-0 up with only minutes to go. That’s how it stayed.
This weekend we host 2nd placed Palmerston North Marist, which we know will be a tough battle with both teams having won a game each, and trying to play an attractive brand of football. We look forward to hosting Simon, the PNM players and their supporters in the clubrooms after the game.
